Heidi's special research interests (academically) include understanding the relationships between health behavior and chronic disease (type 2 diabetes) management, in the area of patient-provider communication.
Heidi has worked in various Public Health organizations, typically in the area of chronic disease mitigation, specifically designing and disseminating health promotion campaigns and community health courses - in both group and 1:1 settings.
Most recently, Heidi worked with the National Health Service (NHS) in London, UK, within the National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP), aiming to halt the progression from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes in adults currently at risk.

I'm researching the clinical application of dietary health behavior change talk and health promotion approaches in an interprofessional (community health) clinic specializing in pre- and type 2 diabetes mitigation. Concurrently, I'm involved in research into implicit racial bias and how it affects clinical communication and health outcomes. My research focus is typically qualitative, but also around the application of a method called 'conversation analysis' that is useful in understanding how we as humans achieve actions in communication, in life, and in all institutional settings.
Specific research (ongoing now);
- Systematic Review: How has Conversation Analysis been used to understand Dietary Health Behavior Change Talk?
- How comfortable do graduate and pre-service health professionals feel about giving dietary advice to adults at risk of and living with type 2 diabetes?
- Conversation Analysis of One-to-One Consultations between Dietitians and Adults at risk of and living with Type 2 Diabetes.
- Conversation Analysis of Dietary Education Groups involving Allied Health Professionals and Adults at risk of and living with Type 2 Diabetes.
